Reid was taken to a hospital in Kiev and has since been evacuated to Germany for specialist treatment. It is believed he was injured after stepping on a landmine. He was arrested in Moscow in 2019 for intoxication and sentenced to 9 years in prison in July 2020 but was released in April 2022 as part of a prison swap.

Reed was rushed to a hospital in Kiev and has since been flown to Germany for specialist treatment.
Two unnamed US military officials, who were briefed on the incident, told The Messenger that Reed was injured after stepping on a landmine two weeks ago.
Officials said they did not know the extent of Reid’s injuries but claimed he suffered a stab wound from the blast.
Sources expressed disappointment in Reed’s case because of warnings to American citizens against traveling to Ukraine and the lengths to which the United States went to free him in April 2022.
Reid was arrested in the summer of 2019 after Russian authorities said he assaulted an officer while being escorted to a police station after a night of heavy drinking.
He was later sentenced to nine years in prison, though his family maintained his innocence – and the US government described him as wrongfully detained.
This is a developing story.

‘Since the start of the war, we have warned that US citizens traveling to Ukraine, particularly for the purpose of participating in the fighting there, face significant risks, including the very real risk of capture or death,’ the source explained to the outlet.
The official stressed that Reed had ‘not been involved in any activity on behalf of the US government, and… the US government has single-handedly warned Americans not to travel to Ukraine, to participate in the war there.’
According to The Messenger, a group of guerrilla fighters are claimed to have joined the Ukrainian side in resisting Russian forces.
