Elon Musk joins the backlash against Barbie, with the Tesla tycoon taking to Twitter to condemn the blockbuster’s depiction of ‘patriarchy’.
It’s the biggest film of the year and has taken the box office by storm worldwide, but Barbie has drawn backlash from some – especially conservatives – for what they describe as its ‘anti-man’ and ‘woo’ agenda.
Billionaire Musk, who is known for being outspoken and often aligns himself with conservative views, has indicated that he is not a fan of the message of the film, which was produced by feminist director Greta Gerwig.
Responding to a meme, Musk said on Twitter, ‘Every time Barbie says the word ‘patriarchy’ you take a shot, you’ll be gone before the movie is over.
Musk has previously declared himself a ‘free speech absolutist’ which has allowed people like self-confessed misogynist Andrew Tate to return to Twitter and share anti-trans content.

She’s not alone in taking issue with the girl power message and how the film portrays male-female relationships.
Conservative commentator Lauren Chen shared what she called the film’s “imaginative misanthropic message.”

Ginger Getz attended a launch party at the British Embassy in Washington DC on Monday, walking the pink carpet and sipping on pink cocktails.
Her husband Matt Getz, 41, even got into the Barbie spirit, opting for a pink sport coat for the occasion and complimenting her white ‘energy’.
But, being a self-professed Barbie fan, after watching the film she said she was disappointed by the values it promoted.

He also slammed star Ryan Gosling’s ‘beta energy’, despite the actor being widely praised for his performance.
She tweeted: ‘Thinking of watching a Barbie movie? I would suggest getting inspired and skipping the theater.
‘Here’s why: The Barbie I grew up with was a representation of limitless possibilities, embracing diverse careers and women’s empowerment.
‘The 2023 Barbie movie, unfortunately, disregards any concept of faith or family and attempts to normalize the idea that men and women cannot (are) positively cooperating.’
Ms Getz, however, praised Margot Robbie’s performance as Barbie and the film’s ‘stunning costume design’ and ‘amazing soundtrack’.
While most were critical of the film’s themes, conservative commentator Ben Shapiro made his disdain for it particularly clear.
She shared a viral YouTube video ‘Ben Shapiro Destroys Barbie Movies for 43 Minutes’, which has garnered over 1 million views.

The video is accompanied by her setting a Barbie doll on fire and says the image’s message is: ‘Either you’re a third-wave feminist who hates men, really hates men, or you’re being brainwashed.’
In a similar vein to Musk’s tweet, he took to the platform to say: ‘All you need to know about #BarbieTheMovie is that it uses the word ‘patriarchy’ more than ten times alone.’
Far-right media commentator Jack Posobiec called Barbie a ‘misanthropic oak propaganda fest’ and ‘perhaps the most anti-male film ever made’.
The film drew further criticism from right-wing figures before its release after it was banned in Vietnam due to a dispute with China.

Republicans were furious that a crayon map in the film featured the ‘nine-dash line’, which Chinese authorities use to show their claim to 90 percent of the South China Sea.
It has angered the likes of Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Mike Gallagher who have accused Hollywood of buying into Chinese Communist Party propaganda.
The film, however, received wide acclaim from critics and fans.
Republicans are outraged that the movie shows the ‘nine-dash line’, which China uses to claim territory in the South China Sea.
Some shared their thoughts on Rotten Tomatoes, with one describing the highly-anticipated film as ‘one of the most entertaining films of the year’.
Critics also praised director Greta Gerwig, 39, for achieving ‘a delightful balance between silly and serious’.
Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times said, ‘This is a truly original work – one of the smartest, funniest, sweetest, most insightful and just plain entertaining movies of the year.
Alice Saville of Time Out wrote, ‘It’s a surprisingly fun watch that manages to simultaneously celebrate and satirize the Barbie brand, its feminism and girlishness like a floaty pink skirt like Garpcore sandals.’
