Popular dessert chain Couch shut down after its owners couldn’t find investors.
The first store opened in Brisbane’s South Bank in 2014 before becoming a franchise in 2019, with stores in Charmside, Mt Gravatt and Broadbeach.
Arif Memis co-founded the chain with his wife Hava Memis after moving from Sydney to Brisbane to start a new life. He took to LinkedIn to share the news.
Mr Memis wrote, ‘It is with heavy hearts and a combination of emotions that we write this letter to inform you of the closure and liquidation of our beloved business, Couch.
‘As founders, owners and a husband and wife team, we poured our hearts and souls into building Couch from the ground up, and it pains us deeply to reach this difficult decision.’

The company went into voluntary administration four months ago and failed to find investors during that time.
‘We explored every avenue, hoping to find a lifeline that would allow Couch to continue serving our delightful dessert cocktails and mouth-watering confections,’ Mr Memis said.
‘Unfortunately, despite our unwavering dedication and tireless efforts we were unable to secure the necessary investment.’
Mr Memis thanked everyone from his staff to customers who have been a part of this journey and supported the business.
‘Couch is a labor of love, a dream we’ve nurtured and watched grow over the years,’ he said.
‘We are extremely proud of what we have achieved and the mark we have made on the dessert and cocktail scene.’
The company went into voluntary administration four months ago and failed to find an investor during that time, announcing it would work with liquidators to ensure ‘all matters are conducted with the utmost care and transparency’.
The Memis family said they would work with the liquidators to ensure ‘all matters are handled with the utmost care and transparency’.
“Our goal is to minimize the impact on our dedicated staff members, loyal suppliers and cherished customers as we navigate these uncharted waters,” he wrote.
‘While this chapter of our lives may be coming to an end, we believe that new doors will open, bringing new opportunities and exciting adventures.
‘We will always cherish the memories we made together and Couch will forever hold a special place in our hearts.’
