Donald Trump revealed that he received a target letter from special counsel Jack Smith regarding the Justice Department’s January 6 investigation.
On his Truth social account, Trump claimed he faced ‘arrest and charges’ and was given just four days to respond to the letter, which he received on Sunday night.
He said he had been offered a chance to speak to the grand jury, which meets later this week at a federal courthouse in Washington, D.C.
‘Joe Biden’s DOJ prosecutor, demented Jack Smith, sent a letter (again, it was Sunday night!) stating that I was a target of a grand jury investigation on January 6th, and gave me a scant 4 days to report. Grand juries, which almost always mean arrests and indictments,’ the former president wrote.

Smith is leading the Justice Department’s investigation into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
Smith, as part of his investigation, examined testimony and documents related to fundraisers, Trump rallies before the Jan. 6 uprising at the Capitol, and communications between Trump aides and election officials in battleground states.
In December, Smith subpoenaed local election officials in Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona and Pennsylvania, asking them to contact or engage with a list of Trump, his 2020 campaign aides and allies involved in trying to overturn the election results.
It’s unclear what aspect of Smith’s investigation Trump might be charged with, but the letter suggests charges are imminent.
Trump repeated his claims in his statement that he is a ‘witch hunt’ and the victim of a weaponized federal government.
He wrote that ‘they have effectively convicted me three times now…. probably the fourth coming from Atlanta’ and added in capital letters, ‘this witch hunt is about election interference and the complete and utter (political) weaponization of the law. Apply!’
The former president is scheduled to travel to Iowa on Tuesday, where he is taping a town hall with Fox News host Sean Hannity.
Special counsel Jack Smith has already charged Trump with 37 felony counts of illegally keeping classified records at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
Trump was indicted last month on 37 criminal charges for illegally keeping classified records at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and refusing government demands to return them. Both Trump and his aide, Walt Nauta, who was also indicted, have pleaded not guilty.
A hearing on Trump’s secret documents criminal case is scheduled for Tuesday in federal court in Florida.
Trump’s attorneys have asked that any trial in the case be held after the 2024 election. Trump is leading in polls for the Republican presidential nomination. Smith’s prosecutors opposed that bid.
The former president is under criminal investigation by a Georgia state attorney for trying to get election officials there to reverse his loss to Joe Biden in that state.
