The mother of incoming Ohio State wideout Cornell Tate, 40, was killed in a late-night drive-by shooting in Chicago, as four others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The mother of incoming Ohio State wide receiver Cornell Tate died in a drive-by shooting in Chicago this past weekend, according to multiple reports.
Ashley Griggs, 40, was fatally shot around 2 a.m. Sunday in the Garfield Park neighborhood on the Windy City’s West Side, according to local law enforcement.
She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she died from her injuries and was later identified as Tate’s mother.
Four others, one woman and three men, aged between 32 and 42, were also injured in the shooting, though they are believed to be in non-life-threatening conditions.
The Chicago Police Department released information from one of the victims and claimed the gunman was ‘travelling in a vehicle’ at the time of the incident.

Griggs’ family says Tate’s mother played a key role in the rise of college football
Tate enrolled at Ohio State last January and was ranked as the third-best receiver in the United States
Before his death, Griggs was vocal about his son’s opportunity to continue playing football at Ohio State — an NCAA Division 1 program that is one of 14 teams in the newly formed Big 12 conference.
‘Finally the wait is over,’ he tweeted earlier this month when his son’s No. 17 jersey for Ohio State was first put up for sale online.
Tate played for Marist High School in Chicago before moving to Florida to play at IMG Academy his junior and senior seasons.
He averaged 20.3 yards rushing last year, playing his final season of high school football and was ranked as the 22nd best player by 247Sports.

What’s more, Tate ranked as the third-best wideout in the 247’s 2023 recruiting class. The incoming freshman enrolled at Ohio State last January.
Griggs’ family said Tate’s mother was instrumental in the football star’s rise to college football.
‘He’s trying to take it day by day,’ Paul Griggs, the wide receiver’s cousin, told NBC Chicago on Monday.
The Ohio State University said in a released statement, ‘Our coaches and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, are incredibly saddened and will support Cornell in any way we can during this most difficult time with our players.’
