What Your iPhone's Secret Symbols Really Mean

If you’re not familiar with your cellphone’s mysterious markings, you’d be forgiven for dismissing them as malfunctions.

Last week, we revealed that the little colored dots that appear at the top of your screen were built-in warning signs when your privacy is being invaded.

Now social media users are wondering what the mystery white dot on the official Apple app means.

The dot indicates where the current temperature falls on the daytime temperature scale. If the high is forecast to be 82 degrees and the white dot is at the end, it’s the hottest part of the day

At sunset the white dot indicates the sun’s position relative to the horizon. For the UV index, the white dot represents the index at the current time

The tiny white dot is in the color bar for the current day only. The dot indicates where the current temperature falls on the daytime temperature scale.

If the high is forecast to be 82 degrees and the white dot is at the end, it’s the hottest part of the day.

The same index is present at UV index and sunset. The white dot in the sunset widget indicates the position of the sun relative to the horizon. It will also give you an estimate of when the sun will set.

For the UV index, the white dot represents the index at the current time. This makes it easy to plan outdoor activities.

You can swipe left or right on the hourly temperature indicator to view the weather. Now you know.

Dot had users scratching their heads when it was introduced in 2020 as part of the iOS 15 software update.

It was one of the features imported from the fan-favorite Dark Sky weather app, which Apple acquired that year.

The move saw Apple’s in-house app receive a major visual overhaul, making it easier to navigate and find the information you’re looking for.

Apple also added a world map with current temperatures and a 10-day forecast — something most weather apps have had for years.

The changes were well received, but some were a bit confusing. Some users have noticed colored bars and seemingly out-of-place dots in the 10-day forecast.

The orange ‘dot’, which may also appear yellow, means your device’s microphone is currently in use

There are three main colored ‘dots’, also known as Apple status bar icons, that appear at the top of the phone’s screen. A green dot, the same size and shape as the orange one, means your camera is currently using an app

This is not a visual flaw but a secret that the revamped weather app is hiding. The same dot can be seen on the UV index scale just below the app’s main page.

Colored bars in the forecast section represent the temperature scale for that day, serving as a quick visual guide to temperature fluctuations.

Separately, you may have noticed that small colored dots appear on the top of your iPhone – which could mean much worse.

Newer iPhone models have built-in warning signs for when your privacy is being invaded – and these dots can alert users that their online security may be at risk.

There are three main colored ‘dots’, also known as Apple status bar icons, that appear at the top of the phone’s screen.

The blue dot, which has a white arrow pointing right inside of it, is the ultimate to be aware of. This will appear if an app tries to access your location.

The orange ‘dot’, which may also appear yellow, means your device’s microphone is currently in use

A green dot, the same size and shape as the orange one, means your camera is currently using an app

This is not to be confused with a blue dot that can appear alongside apps on your phone’s home screen.

It simply means an app has been updated recently and there is nothing to worry about.

If you don’t expect an app to use your camera, microphone, or location services, the presence of one of these points is cause for concern.

You can check which of your apps are using these features by going to the phone’s control center and checking the dot icon above

This will reveal which apps are using your microphone, camera or location

You can go to Settings and turn on the App Privacy Report to see a running log of which apps are using your sensitive ‘permissions’ and when.

It’s also important to check your iPhone’s security features as Newstimesuk.com recently reported facial recognition can compromise your data and privacy.

Hackers can unlock your phone without your knowledge while you sleep by using facial recognition software to grab the device to gain access. But, they fool your iPhone’s facial recognition, giving them unlimited access to your texts, photos, videos, social media accounts, banking and more.
