A US soldier, 23, who went missing only to return a day after his transgender wife was found dead at their military home, has been cleared as a person of interest.
Spc. Craig Chamberlain, 23, is a Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) soldier who, unbeknownst to his wife, stopped showing up for duty in March.
On May 15, after two months of lying about reporting to a military base in Texas, he left their home in Killeen and failed to return.
Craig’s wife, Cameron, reported him missing to police and the base. He was found dead inside their home on May 25 – Craig returned a day later ‘covered in feces’ according to his parents.
The US military launched an investigation but has now ruled that Craig was not involved, although an autopsy has not yet been completed.
In a statement to Newstimesuk.com, the Department of the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division said: ‘At this stage of the investigation, Spc. Craig Chamberlain is not interested in his death.’
Craig Chamberlain was found on May 26, one day after his wife was found dead and ten days after he disappeared from his home. Cam Chamberlain reported her husband missing on May 15. She was found dead at the couple’s home on May 25
The pair married in October 2020 after meeting through a dating app. They moved together to a house not far from the base.
It is still unclear why Chamberlain left his wife and their home on May 15
The department explained that ‘special agents from the Central Texas Field Office of the Army Criminal Investigation Division are working with detectives from the Killeen Police Department to investigate the death of Cameron Chamberlain.
Added: ‘The official cause and manner of death will not be determined until the autopsy report is released.’
Fort Cavazos, formerly Fort Hood, has struggled with several murders and deaths in recent years — including the brutal beating of servicewoman Vanessa Guillen on its premises.
Earlier this year, the Army opened an investigation into the death of 21-year-old Fort Hood engineer Ana Basalduarruiz, who told her mother she was being sexually harassed by her superiors.
The latest tragedy has plunged the troubled foundation back into the spotlight.

On May 25, she was found dead inside their home. Craig then reappeared in the area the next day. It is still unclear how Cameron died, or specifically where Craig was found.
Because he died in their home, the Army is leading the investigation and the Killeen Police Department is clearing all questions.
Cameron made a desperate plea to find her husband when she was first reported missing.
The pair married in October 2020 after meeting through a dating app. They moved together to a house not far from the base.
On May 15, Cameron reported Craig missing to the local police department.
In her statement, she said he left her with no money, and missed so many car payments that their car was repossessed.
He begged her to return to him safely like his parents and was horrified to learn that he had not been on duty for months.
Chamberlain’s parents said he was ‘bruised’ when he was found in May
In an interview at the time, she said Fort Cavazos only told her he wasn’t going to work when she reported him missing to police.
On May 25, Cam’s death was confirmed by Fort Cavazos, but no one confirmed the cause of death, nor did they reveal what led to his discovery.
The next day, Craig finds Chamberlain in a ‘civilian group’ area.
It is not clear where he is now.
When he was found, his parents said he had ‘wounds’ on his body.
Cam’s friends fear she may have committed suicide after being left alone without her husband paying for food.
‘I have nothing to eat. I have been asking so called friends for some grocery money on cash app and no one can be bothered.
‘The army told me there was nothing they could do. I’m suicidal,’ she told a friend in a text.
Craig’s parents have not publicly addressed his death, nor have they discussed their relationship.
The fugitive soldier has not yet spoken publicly about his whereabouts.
