Wahib Zahid, 19, will appear at Highbury Magistrates’ Court later today charged with causing death by dangerous driving and fleeing the scene.

A man has been charged nearly a week after a fatal hit and run in south London.

Wahib Zahid, 19, from Dagenham, was arrested by detectives on Thursday following a collision in Clapham High Street in the early hours of Sunday, which left a 27-year-old man dead.

Zahid was last night charged with causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

He is expected to appear at Highbury Corners Magistrates’ Court later today.

According to the Met Police, they received an emergency call at 2.41am on Sunday July 9, claiming that a pedestrian had been hit by a car on Clapham High Street.

Emergency services including police officers, London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service battled to save the pedestrian’s life, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The vehicle failed to stop at the scene of the collision.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be officially confirmed, but specialist officials have informed his next of kin.

The investigation was led by specialist officers from the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command.
