Ten men accused of being part of a Rochdale grooming gang have gone on trial for sexually abusing girls as young as 13 in the early 2000s.

The men have been charged with 74 offenses including human trafficking in the UK for rape, sexual activity with an underage girl and sexual exploitation.

The charges relate to alleged incidents between 2003 and 2008 involving two teenage girls.

Eight men appeared during a pre-trial hearing at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court on Wednesday. Two did not appear in court due to medical problems.

They spoke only to confirm their names and entered no pleas to the multiple horrific crimes each is accused of.

Irfan Kurban, 43, of Innings Way, Rochdale, was charged with two counts of indecent sexual activity with a girl.

Navid Anwar, 38, of Collie Street, Rochdale, has been charged with three counts of indecent sexual activity with an underage girl.

Sheraj Hussain, 39, of Cook Street, Rochdale, has been charged with 12 offences, including six counts of raping a girl aged 13 to 15 and six counts of indecent sexual activity with a child.

Khalid Mahmood, 39, of Wardle Edge, Rochdale, has been charged with raping a woman and raping a minor girl.

Shakeel Ahmed, 40, of Spinners Green, Rochdale, has been charged with four offences, including the rape of a minor girl and penetrative sexual activity with a minor girl.

Mohammed Zaheed, 36, of Midhurst Street, Rochdale, has been charged with six counts of indecent sexual activity with an underage girl.

Navid Anwar, 38, of Collie Street, Rochdale, has been charged with three counts of indecent sexual activity with a minor girl.

Gulnwaz Khan, 40, of North Street, Rochdale, has been charged with five offences, including inducing a minor to commit an act of gross indecency, two counts of raping a girl aged 13-15, two counts of indecent sexual activity with a minor. girl
