Laura Elag, 31, was shot when her young son started playing with a handgun while doing laundry. Police in Norwalk, Ohio, rushed to the scene on June 16 after receiving a frantic call moments after the mother, Laura Ilog, 31, had been shot in the back.
Her Marine husband Alec, 28, who was at work at the time, also called dispatchers, telling them he had received a phone call from his wife “yelling something about my son and to call 911,” police said. .
Ilog was taken to nearby Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where surgeons performed an emergency cesarean section but were unable to save the baby. The eel was tragically pronounced dead about three hours later.
In a heartbreaking tribute, Laura’s husband Alec wrote on social media: ‘There are no words for the pain and loss I feel. He was, is and always will be the love of my life.’

Officers arrived at the home and forced entry through the locked front door, where they found Ilog and her son upstairs in the master bedroom.
She said the house is usually locked and baby gates are installed throughout the house, but her son bypassed the gates while doing laundry and started playing with the gun.
The 2-year-old was removed from the bedroom at Ilg’s request, and paramedics then performed desperate life-saving procedures.
She was said to be ‘fully conscious’ and gave a ‘full account of what happened’, explaining that she was 33 weeks pregnant.
An online commenter for the mother said she ‘enjoyed attending her church and spending time with her family. She met her husband Alec while in the Marines and married on November 23, 2018.’
‘She always wanted to be a mother and a wife… She was an avid reader and especially loved Harry Potter, did crafts and enjoyed board games and was a child at heart,’ the tribute added.

A sweep of the house uncovered the weapon with a shell casing, while the handgun’s magazine was filled with an additional 12 rounds, police said.
Investigators found two other firearms inside the home, a 12-gauge shotgun in the master bedroom closet and an airsoft rifle in the computer room closet.
The Norwalk Police Department’s Detective Bureau, which executed a search warrant at the home, said they found a number of child safety features in the home, including child locks on nearly all door gates and drawers.
The shooting is under investigation, and no charges have yet been filed.
