Tom Cruise reveals why he performed the daring Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One motorcycle stunt on the first day of filming: ‘I was training and I was ready’

Tom Cruise is opening up about why he and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie filmed the motion picture’s most dangerous sequence first.

In the scene, Cruise, 60, is seen riding a motorcycle off a cliff before activating a parachute that lands him safely on the ground when the bike crashes.

Cruise, who is on the promotional trail for the summer blockbuster, explained to Entertainment Tonight that the rationale for filming the dangerous stunt was primarily to ensure that if he was injured, it wouldn’t shut down the $200 million movie.

‘Well we know we’ll either go ahead with the film or we won’t – let’s find out on day one!’ Cruise, who plays Ethan Hunt in the action film franchise, told the outlet.

The veteran Hollywood star continued: ‘Let’s find out day one, what’s going to happen: are we all going to continue or is it a big rewrite?’

The showbiz stalwart previously injured his ankle during the production of Mission: Impossible 6, affecting filming.

The A-list actor said that he focused intensely on the cinematic sequences involving motorcycles, which required maximum physical precision.

‘I was training and I was ready,’ Cruz said. ‘You have to be razor sharp when you’re doing something like that.

‘It was very important as we were making the film that it was actually the first thing. I don’t want to shoot anything other than this and put my mind somewhere else.’

He added of the mentality heading into filming it: ‘Everyone was ready – let’s do it.’

Cruise said that capturing the moment was a cross-section of his own past experiences with the stunts and the inventions of the filmmakers he was working with on the movie.

Earlier this month, the film’s director Christopher McQuarrie told Empire magazine that stopping filming with dangerous stunts set a tone for the production.

‘One day gave us all the time in the world to figure out why [Ethan] He’s doing what he’s doing,’ he said. ‘If we sit around and try to figure these movies out the old-fashioned way, you’ll never find it, because it’s a living, breathing thing.’
