‘She’s 12 and I’m 30’: Biden tells women in crowd at teachers union speech

President Joe Biden opened a Democratic National Committee address to a teachers union Friday with eye-opening remarks.

Pointing to a member of the crowd from the National Education Association, he said: ‘You’ve got to say hi to me. We go back a long way. He was 12, I was 30.’

The audience laughed before he said: ‘This woman has helped me do so much’.

Commenting later, he said: ‘I mean this from the bottom of my heart. Those of you who know me never doubt that I mean what I say, the problem is that I sometimes say what I mean.’

This was the start of a speech in Washington DC where he attacked MAGA Republicans and called GOP leader Kevin McCarthy’s ‘Commitment to America’ policy plan ‘thin’.

The president vowed to veto the Republican abortion ban if it came to his desk and said the midterms were a choice between ‘hope, unity, optimism’ and ‘division, fear, gloom’.

He celebrated gas prices falling to $1.30 a gallon and renewed his attacks on the use of assault weapons.

‘What in God’s name do you need assault weapons for? It’s an assault weapon designed to kill people, to protect America, to protect people.’

“After opposing and obstructing everything we’ve tried to do to stop progress for the past two years, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went to Pennsylvania and unveiled what he called the “Pledge to America.” series that he says Republicans will pursue if they regain control of Congress.’

‘In about an hour, there are a few things we haven’t heard,’ Biden continued. ‘We never heard him mention the right to vote. We never heard him mention Medicare. We never heard him talk about Social Security.’

Biden mocked McCarthy for suggesting he ‘restore faith in elections’.

‘With a plain face, Kevin McCarthy says MAGA Republicans are going to restore faith in our elections. As we say in my faith, “Bless me Father for I have sinned,” he told the crowd.

What McCarthy talked about, Biden said, was preserving constitutional liberties.

‘Sounds good. I’m all for it, we all are,’ the President said. ‘But look what they actually did.’

‘MAGA Republicans cheered and embraced the first Supreme Court decision in our entire history, the first in our entire history, that not only failed to protect a constitutional liberty, it actually took away a fundamental right that was taken for granted. Many Americans have the same court – the constitutional right to choose,’ Biden noted.

Commenting later, he said: ‘I mean this from the bottom of my heart. For those of you who know me, no one ever doubts what I say, the problem is that I sometimes say what I mean.

Republicans of all stripes embraced the Dobbs decision — which overturned the landmark 1973 case Roe v. Wade and returned abortion laws to the states.

There is some debate among Republicans — especially after GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced a nationwide 15-week ban bill — whether to try to outlaw abortion at a federal level or keep it at the state level.

“If they win in Congress, I will veto it,” Biden said of the Graham abortion bill.

McCarthy’s Promise to America mentions protecting the rights of the unborn, but during his appearance with other GOP lawmakers in Monongahela, they didn’t put their position on abortion front and center.

Instead McCarthy promised that the first bill the GOP majority in the House would pass would be to ‘lay off 87,000 IRS agents’ – a figure Republicans took from the Treasury Department’s assessment of how many IRS employees could be hired using $80 billion in appropriations in the Inflation Reduction Act. , drum up opposition to the bill.

‘And finally, with a straight face, Kevin McCarthy said mega Republicans will restore faith in our elections,’ Biden continued. ‘As we say in my faith, “Bless me Father for I have sinned.” Do you restore? Bring back faith in our elections?’ The president said with a smile.

He added, ‘MAGA Republicans refuse to accept the results of the 2020 election.

Biden also indicated that the MAGA brand, associated with former President Donald Trump, was not strong in the general election.
