President Joe Biden has attacked House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy’s ‘thin’ promises to America and mocked him for saying he would ‘restore faith’ in American elections in another speech attacking MAGA Republicans.
Biden appeared before a crowd at the National Education Association’s headquarters in Washington on Friday afternoon for the Democratic National Committee’s political event, where he previously drew significant attention to the presence of McCarthy and House Republicans in Pennsylvania.
‘After two years of opposing and obstructing everything we’ve tried to do to stop progress, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went to Pennsylvania and unveiled what he called “America’s Promise.” ‘It’s a thin series of policy goals with a limited amount of detail that he says Republicans will pursue if they regain control of Congress.’
President Joe Biden has attacked House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s ‘thin’ promises to Americans and mocked him for ‘flat-faced’ claims that he will ‘restore faith’ in American elections.
‘In about an hour, there are a few things we haven’t heard,’ Biden continued. ‘We never heard him mention the right to vote. We never heard him mention Medicare. We never heard him talk about Social Security.’
What McCarthy talked about, Biden said, was preserving constitutional liberties.
‘Sounds good. I’m all for it, we all are,’ the President said. ‘But look what they actually did.’
‘MAGA Republicans cheered and embraced the first Supreme Court decision in our entire history, the first in our entire history, that not only failed to protect a constitutional liberty, it actually took away a fundamental right that was taken for granted. Many Americans have the same court – the constitutional right to choose,’ Biden noted.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy outlined House Republicans’ ‘commitment to America’ in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, outside Pittsburgh on Friday.
Republicans of all stripes embraced the Dobbs decision — which overturned the landmark 1973 case Roe v. Wade and returned abortion laws to the states.
There is some debate among Republicans — especially after GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced a nationwide 15-week ban bill — whether to try to outlaw abortion at a federal level or keep it at the state level.
“If they win in Congress, I will veto it,” Biden said of the Graham abortion bill.
McCarthy’s Promise to America mentions protecting the rights of the unborn, but during his appearance with other GOP lawmakers in Monongahela, they didn’t put their position on abortion front and center.
Instead McCarthy promised that the first bill the GOP majority in the House would pass would be to ‘lay off 87,000 IRS agents’ – a figure Republicans took from the Treasury Department’s assessment of how many IRS employees could be hired using $80 billion in appropriations in the Inflation Reduction Act. , drum up opposition to the bill.
‘And finally, with a straight face, Kevin McCarthy said mega Republicans will restore faith in our elections,’ Biden continued. ‘As we say in my faith, “Bless me Father for I have sinned.” Do you restore? Bring back faith in our elections?’ The president said with a smile.
He added, ‘MAGA Republicans refuse to accept the results of the 2020 election.
Biden also indicated that the MAGA brand, associated with former President Donald Trump, was not strong in the general election.
Both he and his chief of staff, Ron Klein, have predicted in recent days that Democrats could keep control of the House and Senate.
Historically, the White House party loses seats during the first midterm elections.
‘You see the MAGA Republican program is all these people adapting to the primaries and then when they get out of the primaries they’re trying like hell to get out from under it,’ Biden said.
