Within seconds of your child being born, most parents feel an irresistible urge to protect their baby from harm, no matter what the circumstances.
But a new father’s immediate response to a crisis shows his sudden bias towards a special member of his family, whom he has saved above all others.
Addressing Reddit, a distraught wife explained how her husband had left her and their newborn twins to protect themselves in the garden when a swarm of fish ran towards them.
She said: “My husband, Brent, and I have been together for seven years, married twice.
“We can go on well. He’s a really kind man, although things have been difficult since we were twins, and after this incident, I’ve been asking a lot of questions.”

Acknowledging that the couple is struggling to keep up with housework and gardening while trying to raise two children and a dog, they have decided to hire a professional gardener to help them.
“I hired a woman named Gina, who was in her mid-20s, who did some work for my neighbors and was well-reviewed,” she said.
“We decided to do it one day and we had lunch there. The twins were in their playpen on a blanket, Gina and I were weeding and Brent was doing some pruning.”
But while Brent was working on the other side of the garden, he accidentally disturbed a nest, causing them to come out in droves from all directions.
He added: “Without telling us anything, he immediately ran past our kids, grabbed his dog (a small terrier) and walked into the house and locked the door.
“Thank God the presence of Gina’s mind was even greater because when I was still trying to understand what she was running away from, she noticed a swarm of people, and said ‘get into the shed’.
His wife, children and gardener spent more than an hour hiding in the shed.

“We hid the kids. We didn’t have a phone. We sat there for a while and we saw the garden floating.
“I saw Brent looking out the window and I tried to mime him to call for help but he didn’t seem to understand.”
After spending more than an hour in the shed with two screaming babies, a selector came and was able to clear the bamboo garden.
Meanwhile, her husband was resting indoors with his dog, eating a sandwich he had made during the ordeal.
“It turned out that a neighbor saw the incident and called the destroyer,” he added.
“I’m sad. How could he run past our kids and lock us out of the house?”
“If I had been alone in the garden I would not have been able to carry both the baby and open the shed door at the same time.
“It’s a miracle no one was hurt.
The differences between the dog’s lifespan and breed are surprising, according to new research
“I was outraged and he claimed it was an emergency response but it was almost bad for me. His immediate response was to abandon his wife and children.”
While most users have criticized her husband for his response, others have urged the woman to take a closer look at his marriage.
One user said: “Perhaps he can’t be blamed for a snap instinct to run home. He can be blamed for being there and doing nothing.
“I know personal anecdotes aren’t science, but when I was a kid my dad ran through a swimming pool to get to me.
“Most parents I know are willing to risk serious injury to protect their families or at least their children.
“I don’t know the exact situation, of course, but I’m surprised he’s not wearing a long jacket and long trousers and then trying to run to the shed with a phone to make sure everyone is OK.
“I know most parents don’t go crazy at home knowing that everyone is OK.”
Another user added: “It’s awful! I can’t imagine why anyone would do such a thing. It’s not even remotely normal.
“Even if he had an insane flight response, instead of doing anything to help his wife and children, he locked the door and sat down with a sandwich. It’s complete madness.
“You have the right to be angry. And you have the right to question your marriage to this man.
“Have you talked to her about this? This is her first job. I want to know what possible arguments she has in her head that will justify putting you and your children in such danger.”
“If those bamboos were holding your kids, they could have died. No exaggeration – he could have killed your kids. He needs to understand how serious this situation is.”
“And, because it’s bothering me, what did he think he was going to do with locking the door on the earth? Was he afraid that the folds would coordinate the effort to turn their knots?”
